Seamstress fitting the back of a lace wedding dress on a bride in Richmond, London

Bridal alterations are unlike any other tailoring job — the fabrics are delicate, the timeline is emotional, and the fit matters in every photograph. At our Richmond workshop we walk every bride through the same clear process.

When to book your first fitting

We recommend booking your first bridal fitting 8–12 weeks before the wedding. That gives us time for two or three fittings, plus a final press.

What happens at each fitting

First fitting: we pin and mark all the major alterations — length, bodice, straps and any structural changes.

Second fitting: we check the sewn alterations and refine the fit around the bust and waist.

Final fitting: a full try-on with your shoes and any jewellery, plus the final press.

Common bridal alterations

Hem shortening (with or without a horsehair braid), bodice adjustments, strap and sleeve work, adding a bustle for the reception, and small repairs to lace or beading.

What to bring to the fitting

Bring the shoes you'll be wearing (or a similar heel height), the underwear you'll wear on the day, and any veil or accessories that affect how the dress sits.

Frequently asked questions

How many bridal fittings will I need?
Most brides need two to three fittings. Complex gowns with heavy beading or structural changes may need an additional fitting.
How much do bridal alterations cost?
Bridal alteration costs vary widely depending on the dress, fabric, complexity and any lace, beading or structural work required. We give a free, written quote at your first fitting so there are no surprises.
Do you also press the dress before the wedding?
Yes — a final press is included with our bridal alteration service. Collect the dress the day before your wedding, ready to wear.
